10 Fun Facts About Sex

22 Jun

(borrowed from photobucket)

Whether it’s creating life or just spicing up our lives, sex is vital. And not just to us erotic romance writers. It’s something everyone knows, even if some people don’t want to admit it, LOL. 😉

As you might expect, as a writer (and a woman looking to get her freak on!), I’ve been known to scour the internet for inspiration–and I don’t mean looking at porn. All the time anyway. I do random Bing searches on certain aspects of sex here or there. From unique sexual positions to what it feels like to lick a man’s six pack, there isn’t anything I won’t research.

My job is so difficult sometimes.

And I had to do a lot of research for my BDSM novel His Forbidden Submissive, releasing June 27th from Ellora’s Cave. (Oh look, shameless self promotion, LOL. It’s the last for this blog. Scout’s honor. *crosses fingers behind back*) I’ve enjoyed BDSM stories by other authors and I’ve always been curious about the lifestyle, but I really didn’t know much about how the lifestyle really works.

Enter my research.

So at this point, I’m betting you think you know what this post is going to be about. My BDSM-specific research. And if you guessed that, you’re wrong, LOL. I’ll be discussing the BDSM aspect of my research on Monday (June 25th) when I’m guest blogging over at Delilah Devlin’s. Today, however, I’m blogging about a random blog post I happened across during my research…

So without further ado, I hope you’ll enjoy these 10 fun facts I learned about sex. (This list is stolen from www.sheknows.com.)

1. According to the Museum of Sex, the vibrator was originally used as a medicinal treatment for female “hysteria” during the 19th century.

Wait, what? There’s a Museum of Sex?! There’s a…what? *performs another internet search* OMG, there really is. Click here to go to their virtual home. Click on “store” and then “art pieces.” They have a dildo fishbowl!! Anyone else up for a road trip? 😉

2. Semen contains zinc and calcium, both of which are proven to prevent tooth decay.

Awesome! Just another reason sex rocks. But I can’t help but wonder… Is this true only if taken orally? Or does it matter how the, um, substance enters the body. 😉

3. The iconic “Rabbit” [vibrator] is renowned for two things: excellent orgasm results and an odd smiley face on its tip. Women’s Health tells us the smiley face was actually a result of conservative Japanese customs. Apparently, Japanese consumers frown upon “the production of sex toys that too closely resemble phalluses,” so the smiley face was added.

And great. Now I’ll never look at my rabbit the same way again.

4. The average size of an erect penis is five inches, and the average flaccid penis measures about 3 inches.

Not in any of my novels they’re not. But seriously, only 5″? It’s enough to get the job done I guess. Assuming the only “job” needing to be accomplished is procreation. And that, ladies, is why we need the aforementioned rabbits. Well that and dildos can’t mow the yard.

5. While this sex fact is neither entertaining nor humorous, it’s shocking to note that homosexuality remained on the American Psychiatric Association’s list of mental illnesses until 1973.

I’ve known this for a while (psych major here) but it still just floors me.

6.Today the government issues “Support our Troops” paraphernalia; however government-issued brochures and videos featured a slightly different slogan during the WWII era – “Don’t forget – Put it on before you put it in.” During World War II, many soldiers returned home with venereal diseases, costing the government millions of dollars in medical expenses.

OMG, really? I didn’t believe this when I read it–and yet I did. I’m in the military, and this actually sounds like something  the government would do. To verify this fact, I looked it up on Wikipedia, and Wikipedia said it was true so I believe it, LOL.

7. Hate the gym? You burn about 200 calories during 30 minutes of active sex.

Define active? Would this include the use of the rabbit? Hmm…

8. Burlesque costumes are the epitome of sexy – think Dita Von Teese and lingerie; however, a few centuries ago, the outfits had a slightly different purpose. According to the Museum of Sex, merkins (the bottom half of burlesque costumes) were originally created as “pubic wigs” for 15th century prostitutes. The designs helped hide pubic lice and syphilis symptoms.

I have no words for this one other than “ew.” Pubic lice! Bleck!

9. In Hong Kong, adulterous husbands get more than a steep monthly alimony payment – a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her husband if he cheats on her – but she may only do so with her bare hands.

Nice. I wonder if there’s some sort of statute of when and how a wife can kill her husband. When she catches him in the act? (And does she also have the right to kill the woman or man he’s with?) Or does she get a decree from the judge stating that she, as the wrongfully accused, may kill her husband, but only during the hours of 8-5 and the act must be carried out within one year? Inquiring minds (well this dirty one) wants to know!

10. The sale of sex toys and vibrators is banned in Alabama and Mississippi.

Well, all I can say here is “Sorry neighbors.” Why don’t y’all head on over here to Arkansas, and I can hook you up. 😉

Well there. I bet you learned something you didn’t know about sex–and maybe a few things you didn’t want to know.

Eww, pubic lice.

Anyway, I’m off to work on my guest blog for the awesome Ms. Delilah Devlin. I hope you’ll head over there Monday for my blog titled “Got Bondage?”

Later, lovelies!

Mr.C and I went to the Museum of Sex in New York. Loved it. The were doing an exhibit of sex in motion through the years. Never thought I’d be sitting down to watch porn in such a public place. lol
If you get a chance to go you should. BEST museum ever!
    Great post. 🙂
