Sex Magick + Female Power = Passion’s Portal

1 May

Do you prefer to do it alone or do you have more fun in a group?

Of course, your answer, like mine, may vary depending on the activity. A few months ago, I was invited to participate in a group writing project by Brandi Evans and Nara Malone, two other Passionate Reads bloggers. Although my usual preference is to work independently, their idea really appealed to me and we were quickly joined by two more of our bloggers, Shannon Emmel and Charlotte Stein.

Over the next couple months the five of us easily overcame the challenges of living in different time zones and having different ideas. I am very pleased to say that through the entire creation, production and submission process, no one was inflexible, tried to take control or slack off.  Since this was my first time with such a project, I don’t know if our experience was common among women writers or if we were exceptionally lucky to have come together as we did, but I am anxious to continue the special relationship we formed in the process.

If you’ve had a group writing experience, good or bad, please feel free to share by commenting below.

The end result is that our group project, PASSION’S PORTAL, has been approved for development as a paranormal, erotic romance series at Ellora’s Cave. The stories will be individually written but tied together by the Sisterhood of the Elemental Goddesses and Shadowling Manor, a spooky old mansion on the northeast coast of Maine. Witches, wizards and warlocks, werewolves, shifters, dragons and selkies… Shadowling Manor is an Equal Opportunity Paranormal Environment. Every room has a secret, every portrait a history, and any door just might be a portal to another realm. Sex magick is at the core of the Sisterhood’s power and the energy created during sexual activity is what keeps Shadowling’s portals open.

In hopes of intriguing you to stay tuned for release updates, here are some teasers of the first five books –

Serving Nicole, by Marilyn Campbell (Alchemy)

Nicole Claret’s abilities as an empath began awakening at puberty, and by the time she was in college, the intuitive gift had turned her into a human lie detector. That quality made her a successful private investigator but resulted in her choosing a very solitary personal life. Though occasionally consumed with sexual need, celibacy has been her only option.

At Shadowling Manor, she is promised a solution to her self-imposed isolation and celibacy. Her challenge and tutelage await her in the form of Brett Donahue, a high-level wizard whose specialty is sex magick. His sexual emanations are so strong, her arousal is triggered just being in the room with him.  But his promise to teach her how to control her abilities is all she needs to agree to do anything he orders.

Pack Mating, by Brandi Evans (Earth)

Evelyn Boyd has spent her entire life trying to fit in. Adopted by a religious family, she was taught from an early age her connection to the earth was the “devil’s work”. As a result, she’s suppressed her inner desires…at least in front of others. In the privacy of her home, however, she’s free to be herself. Well mostly. The only two people who have an inkling as to the depths of her connection to the land are her two best friends, Derek Greene and Josh Rivers.

Derek and Josh know Evie better than she knows herself. They’ve watched over her since the day the land birthed her. Part of the Sect of Servio—shifting wolves who are created to defend wingless earth fairies like Evie—they’re life is tied to the earth. And to Evie. Evie, however, has no idea of her magical birthright, not until she arrives at Shadowling Manor where she’s faced with a challenge that will decide whether she—or the wolves born to protect her—live or die.

Taking Flight, by Charlotte Stein (Air)

Penelope Luft has lived her whole life according to every boundary and rule imaginable. She’s eminently practical and completely content with her ordered life—until her wreck of a car leaves her stranded in front of Shadowling Manor. There she finds a destiny she isn’t ready for and a challenge she can’t bring herself to face. On the other side of her Elemental door is nothing but a sheer drop down into an abyss, with only a winged tormentor as a guide.

Erion is everything Penelope isn’t used to. He’s huge, handsome, hung, and more importantly, always naked, just the ticket to get her to let go of her inhibitions on the sex side of things…but less so on the flying. He thinks she’s got it in her to stop trying to scale down the cliff and start leaping off it, but she isn’t sure she even believes in her secret ability to harness the power of air.

It’s going to take some convincing, and a lot of letting go…but Erion is just the man for the job.

Trial by Fire, by Shannon Emmel (Fire)

Commanding Officer Blaise Keegan was the only one in her unit who made it out of the flames in Iraq, miraculously thrown clear of the blast zone. Blaise is trying to ease back into a normal, civilian life at secluded Shadowling Manor, but survivor’s guilt and PTSD have made things emotionally difficult, especially for a woman who is used to always being in charge and coming out on top. She has a warrior’s heart but no clue her strength comes from her dragon heritage and it is that heritage that protected her from the flames.

Hayden Conley is caught completely unprepared when he is suddenly pulled into the earthly plane on the spring equinox. The portal between dimensions has been closed to his kind for millennia, and now he must find his mate quickly. If he fails, he will perish, and with him, his bloodline and the dragon magick of his clan. A warrior King must have a warrior Queen, and he recognizes Blaise on sight. But before she can take her place at his side, he must help her heal her wounded soul and break some old habits, without breaking her will…or her heart.

Make Me Wet, by Nara Malone (Water)

A job that pays the bills and a relationship that’s comfortable, that’s real. Real is all Maille wants. Beast whispering—calling a wolf from the woods or whale to the jetty, hearing the song of a butterfly wooing nectar from a blossom—those weren’t real. Those had to be the imaginary conjurings of a young girl and an old woman. Magick, if it ever existed, died when the lid closed on her grandmother’s coffin. In the seven years since, Maille has made a good life, a content life. So why does she start weeping when she finds herself on a moonlit beach with surf swirling around her ankles?

Seven tears cast upon the sea summon a selkie from across the ocean, calling the man out of the beast. Ronan takes his one night of sex every seven years seriously, but he’s never really believed the old legend—if a woman can make it through a night of attention from a selkie lover, without him bringing her to climax, she will break his enchantment, freeing him to leave the sea. When he returns to the sea at dawn, Ronan wants to go knowing he’s given Maille a night of pleasure she’ll never forget.

Maille doesn’t know Ronan is enchanted, but she realizes from somewhere deep in her beast-whisperer’s soul, she’s more than human. An orgasm could break her control, change her into something that could send Ronan running in the other direction. To break the enchantment, they will have to rely on the oldest magic of all—the power of love-drenched hearts.

I’ve promised to get my contribution in the submission pile by the end of the month, so hopefully I’ll have a refreshing selkie tale out in time to keep everyone company on those hot days at the beach this summer. Notice I said keep you company not keep you cool. Seal that e-reader in a ziplock bag girls and read this one in the water. 😉
