Passionate Reads (PR)       Welcome, Janet! We are so happy to have you join us here a Passionate Reads! We are all familiar with your work, so to start off, perhaps you could tell us a little about, “Janet Evanovich, the person”.

Janet Evanovich (JE)       When I was a kid I spent a lot of time in LaLa Land. La la Land is like an out-of-body experience –while your mouth is eating lunch your mind is conversing with Captain Kirk. Sometimes I’d pretend to sing opera. My mother would send me to the grocery store down the street, and off I’d go, caterwauling at the top of my lungs.

Before the opera thing I went through a horse stage where I galloped everywhere and made holes in my Aunt Lena’s lawn with my hooves. Aunt Lena was a good egg. She understood that the realities of daily existence were lost in the shadows of my looney imagination.

Somewhere down the line I started writing stories. The first story was about the pornographic adventures of a fairy who lived in a second rate fairy forest in Pennsylvania. The second story was about …well never mind, you get the picture.

I sent my weird stories out to editors and agents and collected rejection letters in a big cardboard box. When the box was full I burned the whole damn thing, crammed myself into pantyhose and went to work for a temp agency.

Four months into my less than stellar secretarial career, I got a call from an editor offering to buy my last mailed (and heretofore forgotten) manuscript. It was a romance written for the now defunct Second Chance at Love line, and I was paid a staggering $2,000.

With my head reeling from all that money, I plunged into writing romance novels full time, saying good-by, good riddance to pantyhose and office politics. I wrote series romance for the next five years. It was a rewarding experience, but after twelve romance novels I ran out of sexual positions and decided to move into the mystery genre.

When we moved to New Hampshire we realized there was more to this writing stuff than just writing, so we formed a family business, Evanovich, Inc.

It turns out I’m a really boring workaholic with no hobbies or special interests. My favorite exercise is shopping and my drug of choice is Cheeze Doodles.

I read comic books and I only watch happy movies. I motivate myself to write by spending my money before I make it. And when I grow up I want to be just like Grandma Mazur.

Passionate Reads (PR)       Janet, what is your work day really like?

Janet Evanovich (JE)       I drag myself out of bed around six, shove myself into the clothes laying on the floor and plod down the road after the dog. I eat a boring breakfast of skim milk, orange juice and healthy cereal because when I wake up I always think I’m Christie Brinkley and it seems like something Christie would do. Then I shuffle into the office I share with a really rude parrot. The dog follows after me and flops onto his bed to take a nap. (Next time around I want to be my dog.)

I stare at the computer screen for about four hours, sometimes actually typing some sentences. I chew gum and drink green tea to keep myself from falling out of my chair in a catatonic stupor. At noon I’m suddenly filled with energy and rush to the refrigerator, hoping a pineapple upside-down cake with lots of whipped cream has mysteriously appeared. Finding none, I make a tuna or peanut butter and olive sandwich.

I go back to my office and visualize myself getting exercise. I play an amazing game of mental tennis. In my mind’s eye I look great in the little tennis dress. Very athletic.

When I’m done playing tennis I stare at the computer screen some more. When nothing appears on the screen I drive down to the local store and buy a bag of Cheez Doodles. I eat the Cheez Doodles and manage to actually write several pages. When I’m done with the Doodles and pages I wander out of my office looking for someone to whine at because I just made myself fat. (I’m only Christie Brinkley in the morning. In the afternoon I’m Roseanne.)

I alternate typing and whining for the rest of the afternoon until about five when I emerge from my office, once again hoping for the pineapple cake.

I’d say that pretty much sums it up!

Passionate Reads (PR) Explosive Eighteen comes out in just a few days. Can you give us a hint on what to expect?

Janet Evanovich (JE)        Lots of surprises!  Stephanie’s seat mate on the plane back from Hawaii turns up dead and both the good guys and the bad guys are after her.  Also, Lula falls in love with one of the skips she and Stephanie are after.  We may also find out who Stephanie took to Hawaii with her.

PR:          Your readers have followed Stephanie Plum’s love life as closely as her adventures. Do you have a personal favorite hunk between Ranger, Joe Morelli and Diesel, and more importantly, does Stephanie have a favorite?

JE:        For me personally, it’s like a choice between birthday cake with sprinkles and birthday cake with butter cream frosting.  Either way you go it’s birthday cake!  Stephanie has the same problem.

PR:         Aside from the completely drool-worthy men in Stephanie’s life, you have created a crowd of off-the-wall characters who provide constant humor and  complications. I LOVE them all and oddly, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding on Steroids”, kind of comes to mind when I think of some of characters and scenes. Do you have a particular favorite in the bunch and why?

JE:        I don’t think I could make a choice — they’re all wacky and I love each one for different reasons.  It’s like when your dog has a litter of puppies.  You want to keep them all.  Having said that, I did love the scene in ONE when Grandma shot the roast chicken.

PR:         With SUCH a great cast of colorful characters, have you ever thought about doing a spin-off series featuring any of them in the “lead”? If so, who and why?

JE:        I did.  I took Diesel from the Between the Numbers Plum books (Visions of Sugar Plums, Plum Lovin’, Plum Lucky and Plum Spooky) and spun him off into his own series.  It all started with Wicked Appetite last fall and will continue with the second in the series next June.

PR:         You’ve been in this business for quite a while and I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of changes in writing styles and the tastes of readers. So many people talk about how the reader’s preferences have changed since you were first published, specifically the popularity of the more graphic and erotic love scenes and dialogue that is a great deal more “raw”. What feed back have you gotten and what are your personal feelings on the current trends?

JE:        I really haven’t given that much thought because I really don’t have time to read much.  As far as feedback from readers, most people we hear from are pretty happy with the level of erotic content.

PR:        Numbers are infinite, but do you have a final story in mind in  the Numbers series? Is Ms. Plum ever gonna “settle down”?

JE:        I’m having too much fun to quit now.  And unlike some authors who have the outline of a final book locked in a drawer, I don’t.  As to whether (and with whom) Stephanie will finally settle down, that’s anybody’s guess.

PR:         One For the Money is the first of the Plum series to hit the big screen, and we’re all hoping there will be many more to come. We are very excited and we want all the details pleeeeeeeeze!

JE:        The details are that Jason O’Mara (Morelli) and Daniel Sunjata (Ranger) are HOT.  And Katherine Heigl makes a terrific Stephanie.  The movie will be in theaters on January 27, 2012.  I’ll be there with a large popcorn and (maybe) a box of Junior Mints.

(PR)     Thank you again, Janet for joining us today and for our readers, remember that “Explosvie Eighteen” comes out on November 22.

In the menatime, here’s a sneak peak at  “One For the Money” starring Katherine Heigl…Enjoy!

My mother is addicted to your work. We live in the same house, and she took over my empty bookshelves with Stephanie Plum novels. Now I am hooked too. I think it might be a contagious addiction… Is there such a thing?

Great work and congratulations! Thank you for a wonderful series!

Janet, it was so great learning more about you. I loved the keynote you did at the RWA Nationals conference last year. You’re funny and witty and entertaining to be sure, but you came across as a woman to be admired because of the journey you were so generous to talk about. Congratulations on your successes to date and wishes for many more! Thanks for stopping by Passionate Reads!!

{{Sigh}} I wish I could say good bye and good riddance to pantyhose and office politics. Alas I have to keep the Evil Day Job for a few more years. I love the Stephanie Plum series and I can’t WAIT to see the movie!! Told hubby he has to take me. I know he’ll love it too. Thanks for coming to Passionate Reads!
