And the Round 1 Finalists are…

12 Oct

I wanted to send a big shout out to EVERYONE who entered the pitch contest. Crafting a pitch and sending it out for the entire world to see is no small accomplishment. OK, so it’s not the ‘entire world’ exactly, but putting your work out there for the public to see is an important part of being an author and you know, some people never get up the courage. Big congratulations to all the entrants for having the guts to do that!

The pitches were all so fabulous and myself and the Passionate Reads authors have enjoyed reading them. It’s always fascinating to see story premise and ideas from other writers. They were all so very intriguing, but unfortunately, Grace could only select ten to move to Round 2 and I can’t even imagine how she managed to do that. That’s probably why she’s the editor and I’m the author, right?

So without further delay, the Passionate Reads Pitch Contest Round 1 finalists (in no particular order) are…

No Sweeter Love by Tina Vaughn

Unleashed by April Vine

14 Days of Oh by Sarah Bella

The Witch Bitch by Ursula Blake

Love the Sinner by Avril Ashton

Just Once in a Very Blue Moon by Dawn Marie Hamilton

In the Heart of Darkness by C.M. Torrens

Wolf’s Ward by Envy Augustine

Vigilante by AJ O’Donovan

Triton by Yelle Hughes

According to Grace, the following were the primary criteria she used when looking at the pitches:

  • Clean. If there were grammar errors and typos, that led me to believe the ms would be the same way, so it wasn’t chosen.
  • Unique concept.
  • Demonstration of author voice in pitch.
  • Concise pitch.

And the winner of our reader’s choice vote, who will also be moving onto Round 2 is…

Beneath the Surface by Carrie Clark

Congrats to all our finalists!  For those who weren’t selected for Round 2, keep writing, keep submitting and never give up because there’s one thing you can be sure of–published authors never did!!

If your pitch finaled (Yay!!), you’ll need to send your 1st chapter (in .doc format and NO MORE THAN 5000 WORDS) to passionatereads (at) gmail . com by 11:59 pm (Eastern) Saturday, October 15. If manuscripts are not received by then or they exceed 5000 words, you will be disqualified from the contest. Also, the manuscript must be formatted to the below specifications. Each entry should have:

  • Pen name, title, email address and genre in the header, or simply typed before the chapter starts.
  • Single-spaced, 12 Book Antiqua font.
  • The file named saved as: Pen Name_Book Title.

Oh, and I’ve also included some more inspiration for you :). Sure, no problem, you’re welcome.

Lastly, some words of widsom from Grace about the chapters. They need to:

  • Be edited to within an inch of its life.
  • Stay to length guideline.
  • End in a way that leaves her wanting to read more.

Three of these first chapters will be selected by Grace to proceed to Round 3. Also, starting Sunday readers will have an opportunity to read and vote on the chapters and another reader choice will proceed to the next round if not already one of those picked by Grace!

Any questions? It’s a lot, I know, so feel free to post them here.

Thanks again to everyone and good luck to the finalists!

~Kaily and the rest of the Passionistas

Thank you so much for competition and allowing me to participate. At least once a year or every other year I take a deep breath and submit to EC or try a contest like this. I’ve never made it but I keep trying anyway. =) Congrats to the winners. Your entries were all wonderful!
