Hair. Yeah…

28 Sep

Yeah, you know exactly what I’m talking about. This is that kind of site and we’re those kind of authors LOL. I’m chatting today about hair. Down there. In erotic romance. I know, most people probably don’t really care, probably don’t give it much thought. It’s either mentioned in the book or it isn’t, but I obsess about these kinds of details for every character and every story I write. I love to delve deeply into the Point of View (POV) of the characters and a guy is going to notice it if he’s with someone, you know? I think he’d notice if the woman he’s with has a bush going on au natural, if there’s been some trimming and ‘scaping and certainly if there’s just…nothing. The guy might have a preference, he might do ‘different things’ because of it. Sometimes it’s just a word such as ‘curls’ used once that can draw a picture for the reader and it’s all that’s necessary, sometimes it can lead to nuances of a scene that can be even more erotic. Sometimes it can be used as a plot point itself for example, in my first book, PICTURE THIS, my heroine hasn’t been with a guy for a long time and she’s let the personal grooming slide some. She plans to be with the hero and decided it’s time to ‘tidy up’. There’s a mishap with a razor and she ends up taking it all off. I cover it briefly in a quick thought she has later, but yeah…the hero notices. And show his appreciation :).  To me though, it always comes back to the genre, particularly time period and the character themselves. It’s always about the character and being true to them.

So as a reader, do you even care about this? Do you expect it to be mentioned? Do you prefer it NOT be addressed? Or…do you think I’m nuts and before I mentioned it you’d never even wondered about it?

About a year ago I wrote a very similar post on my own blog…after Grace called me on my historical heroine’s trimmed bush! I totally obsess over this issue too. I don’t care what era it is, I like to think women have been grooming that area since the dawn of time. 🙂

Middle eastern cultures routinely did full body hair removal for women (with string and a honey mixture if I recall correctly) when European cultures didn’t even BATHE on a regular basis and were constantly plagued by head and body lice!

So, perhaps not since the “dawn” of time, but certainly for more than a millenium…

I do pay attention to this, and appreciate when the author handles this and doesn’t just leave it up to my imagination. Though that second pic above freaked me out a bit
