Another Fiction Flasher: Snatch Me

She loves those first moments after a catch,
when the air is incensed,
tastes of desire.
She’s caught in the twin spotlights
of his perusal,
time frozen but for skidding hearts,
the trickle of sweat down necks,
the rise and fall of breath coming in soft pants.

Chase was given and taken,
but the taking’s not done.
A damp promise,
fragrant with passion’s spice,
invites him to strip away the last layer,
spread his feast on lush meadow grass.

But he waits for it
letting the moment draw out,
anticipating an age old sign:
a lift of chin,
a tilt of head exposing a slender neck,
the soft flutter of lashes lowering.
A silent surrender of prey to hunter.

This little bit of flash fiction is from Jolie, a character who showed up in my head with this tidbit when I had zero time to listen. But Jolie wouldn’t go away and the only way I could get back to work on the projects I was supposed to be working on was to stop and write down Jolie’s story. It’s a good thing I listened to Jolie, because editor Grace Bradley offered me a contract for Jolie’s story, Snatch Me, a submission I sent in for the Ellora’s Cave Sex Bytes theme.

From the moment Jolie discovers the Quarterz, a virtual post-apocalyptic world for capture role-players, she can’t resist the challenge. She’s chosen a hard game, where sexual submission to a captor is expected, demanded, no quarter given. But Jolie believes she’s strong enough and smart enough to outwit the hunters. She uses the challenge as an escape from a real life situation that can’t be fixed, only endured. She feels a sense of kinship to a world like the Quarterz, a society too broken to fix.

Mack created the Quarterz and he took a gamble when he secretly lured Jolie there. He’s discovered that who he became as creator of, and player in, the Quarterz, helped him survive the wreckage of his real life. Now he has to hope the same is true for Jolie, has to stand back and allow her to find her way in the rough and tumble adventures of a game where he is not always the captor. But when the game is over, he’s determined to be the one who wins Jolie for real.
