As Lust Goes Gray

When I think of how we used to be,
rain-soaked kisses come to mind.

There’s a limbo between innocence and awakening.
We fall in love in innocence, saying until death we part,
not comprehending the sheer heights we’ll have to scale,
or the depths to which we’ll plummet between the beginning and the end.

When I think of how we used to be, insatiable comes to mind.

There are at least 256 shades of gray on the scale between love and hate.
Falling in lust was our cue to become intimately familiar with each one.

When I think of how we used to be, how little we knew comes to mind.

Now we know. And it’s still your hand I reach for as we start the next climb,
still you catching me when I stumble. A love grown from fantasy to real.
